(The Formative Years) (Pre-Nursery to UKG)
The kindergarten programme of DIS, Jammu inculcates in children the qualities of curiosity, exploration and discovery in a fun-filled, safe and happy learning environment. An individualised approach helps nurture a love for learning; develop social-skills and instill moral values. The emphasis is on developing in students, self confidence and ability to effectively communicate in English as well as in their mother tongue and teachers ensure this through effective use of language and by encouraging children to express themselves freely. A well-balanced curriculum and theme-based instruction help the young minds integrate their learning smoothly. The emphasis is on exploring, knowing, understanding and forming their own ideas. The principles of learning applied in kindergarten include Holistic Development and integrated learning, Active learning, Supportive learning, Interactive learning and learning through play which emphasises Aesthetics and creative expression, Language and literary, Numeracy, self and social awareness with the help of various individual and group activities.
THE JUNIOR SCHOOL
(CLASS I to V)
The primary school curriculum of DIS, Jammu encourages inquiry and exploration and develops child’s competence in various skills; reading, writing, listening, speaking, problem-solving, observation, measurement and use of information and communication technology. The junior school curriculum is a blend of an exciting and creative learning environment with an inter-disciplinary appreciation of languages, mathematics, science and social sciences as individual and integrated subjects. There are a provision and emphasis given to an individual, small group and whole group activities to improve child’s ability to work across all levels. The absolute focus is on developing communication skills so that the child is able to appreciate the value of education through their ability to express themselves in addition to developing pragmatic skills. The wide range of curricular and co-curricular opportunities offered help to instil a sense of confidence, self-worth, team spirit, discipline and individual and social accomplishment. Engagements in community service activities sensitise the children to the needs of their community, nation and to the world around them. Field- trips, excursions, projects, exchange programmes, activities and presentations provide experimental
learning opportunities for the junior-school students.
(CLASS VI to VIII)
Middle school programme of DIS, Jammu is structured to meet children’s varied intellectual and developmental needs. This programme builds on concepts and skills learnt in the junior school. This curriculum ensures progression and continuity across various stages of learning in the school and incorporates continuous evaluation and review of children’s performance.
The main aims of this programme are the development of various skills related to writing, reading, reflecting, critical thinking, public speaking, fostering initiative among students and a desire to acquire knowledge. Apart from Academic subjects; Art, Music, Dance, Yoga, Computer studies are integrated into the mainstream curriculum and are further strengthened as optional co-curricular activities. Personal, social and health education help students to address their age-specific interests and concerns, builds awareness and promotes compassionate and ethical conduct. Through various activities like class assemblies and inter-house cultural and sports competitions, children take up the role of responsibility along with developing healthy competition and team spirit. Community service is offered through school initiated programmes to enhance the feeling of being a local and a global citizen.
